Building Up The Colour

Mix a tiny amount of Sap Green and Burnt Sienna roughly 70/30. The Green is the colour you want but I find that when it comes straight from the pot it can be a little unnatural if you add a Little Burnt Sienna this warms up the green and makes it a much more realistic green.

Illustration 1

Add plenty of water to your green mixture.(It should have the consistency of milk.)

Illustration 2

Once again with your no6 sable brush you should moisten the leaf with clear water, being careful to stay within the edges, no dry patches, no puddles and then apply the Green mixture you previously mixed. Dry with the hairdryer. (See illustration 1)

Illustration 3

Repeat this stage until you have built up enough colour to give you the colour of the leaf. ( See illustration 5.) I did five coats to arrive at the colour I thought was the correct colour for my leaf.

Illustration 4

Please do not be tempted to arrive at this colour with one thick coat of paint as it will cover any work you have previously done. It is far better to use 10 thin coats of paint than one thick coat as all the washes shine through one another giving your leaf a jewel like quality it is difficult to obtain in any other way.

Illustration 5

Your finished leaf should have the same strength of colour as (Illustration 5).
