The Shadow

Mix together some Sap Green, Burnt Sienna and introduce some Sepia (which is a dark brown) then add a tiny amount of Prussian Blue (which is a dark blue.) The colour you should end up with is a dark Green colour.

Illustration 1

We are now going to paint in the shadow that runs down the centre of the leaf. (See illustration 1.) Pick up your no2 sable brush and load it again with clear water moisten the inside of the leaf approximately half a centimetre away from where you are going to paint in the line. ( An eighth of an inch for those of you still clinging to imperial.) Take the clear wash across the leaf roughly halfway, again no dry patches and no puddles. Then working quite quickly paint down the centre of the leaf with the dark paint you previously mixed and then take that dark line into the water that you previously laid down, notice how it starts to blend into the first green you laid down. ( See illustration 1.) Dry with the hairdryer.

Illustration 2

Repeat this along the left side of the leaf. ( See illustration 2.) When you have completed this dry with the hairdryer. You are now ready to start painting in the fine detail.
